HORNELL ST. PATRICK’S DAY 2008
It began with a half-forgotten promise. Almost two decades later, it has become one of the most popular events in the region– a people’s parade that has grown into an event that cannot be missed. Early in 1988, Mayor Shawn Hogan vowed that he would bring a St. Patrick’s Day Parade to Hornell– even if he would have to ride a horse down Main Street by himself. Weeks went by and the vow was forgotten by all… except a local radio personality who publicly reminded Mayor Hogan of the promise. True to his word, Mayor Hogan put on jockey togs and rode a white horse to lead a small but enthusiastic parade down Main Street. A phenomenon was born. Each year, the parade has grown larger and more extravagant, even though there are no rules, no structure and no organization. Anyone can take part just by showing up. The only stipulation is that the parade steps off promptly at 11 A.M. Following the parade ( which grows every year) Hornell hosts numerous, ongoing St. Pat’s celebrations citywide. The parade takes place in all kinds of weather, and has been postponed only once– due to a major snowstorm that left three feet of snow on the ground. Mayor Hogan subsequently vowed the parade never again would be hostage to the weather. Like his original promise, this one too has been kept. Every year the Mayor rides something different in the parade. He always manages to keep it a secret until the day of the parade. Come out this year to see what he has in store for the community!!! The Parade will begin at 11:00 AM at the Hornell Intermediate School Parking lot on Saturday, March 15, 2008. Celebrations will begin after the parade at the K of C. The Maple City Bowl will once again be offering free bus rides from 5:00 PM-1:00 AM between Maple City Bowl, Southside Tavern & The Italian Villa. Local businesses are already gearing up for this event with Special Promotions throughout the City.
Every year the Mayor arrives on something Hornell Area Chamber of Commerce President different. We expect to be surprised again Jim Griffin is always dressed for St. Pat’s this year! Day to pass out carnations throughout the Downtown .
Five Ways To Save At The Pump With average U.S. prices again hovering around three dollars per gallon and little relief in sight, drivers are searching for ways to reduce the costs of getting around town. Paul Bandoly, manager of technical services for WIX Filters, says that while drivers can’t control gas prices, they can take steps to improve their vehicles’ fuel efficiency and lessen the impact of fuel costs on their wallets. He offers vehicle owners the following tips on how to conserve fuel and alleviate some of the pain at the pump. Here are your tips... Ditch that dirty air filter. Air filters keep impurities like dirt,
dust and insects from damaging the engine. “A clogged filter restricts air flow to the engine and results in too
much gas being burned for the amount of air, which wastes gas and reduces
horsepower,” says Bandoly. “Replacing a clogged air filter will protect
your engine and can increase fuel efficiency by as much as 10 percent, a
savings of up to 25 cents a gallon.” Drivers should check their owner’s manual for maintenance intervals to
ensure their engine runs smoothly and efficiently. Upgrade your oil and filters. High grade or synthetic motor oils
perform better over a wider range of operating conditions than
lower-quality oils. Similarly, high quality, premium oil and air filters
trap more contaminants than standard filters and assist in reducing
friction and improving airflow inside the engine. Less friction and
improved air flow allow your engine to more efficiently generate power,
ultimately saving you money at the pump. “Spending a little more up front for high-quality engine lubricants and
premium filters can save car owners significant expenses in the long run,”
says Bandoly. “A more efficient engine can improve gas mileage by as much
as 10 percent, about 25 cents per gallon.” Respect road rules. Aggressive driving can cost you more than a
speeding ticket. Speeding, rapid acceleration and sudden braking can lower
your gas mileage by up to 33 percent on the highway and five percent
around town. Vehicles achieve optimal fuel efficiency at different speeds;
however, gas consumption typically increases rapidly at speeds above 60
mph. As a general rule, for every five mph you drive over 60 mph, you pay
an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas. Observing the speed limit and
anticipating traffic situations can save you from 10 to 50 cents per
gallon. Lighten your load. Drivers should avoid carrying unnecessary heavy
items in their vehicles, especially on roof racks where the cargo causes
increased wind resistance. An extra 100 pounds can reduce fuel efficiency
by up to two percent, costing you three to four cents per gallon. Inflate your savings. Under-inflated tires can be dangerous and may increase fuel consumption by up to three percent. Maintaining correct tire pressure not only increases the life of your tires, but maximizes fuel efficiency and can save you up to seven cents per gallon.

Health Care Proxy Appointing your Health Care Agent in New York State If you become unable, even temporarily, to make health care decisions, someone else must decide for you. Health care providers often look to family members for guidance. Family members may express what they think your wishes are related to a particular treatment. However in New York State, only a health care agent you appoint has legal authority to make treatment decisions if you are unable to decide for yourself. Appointing an agent lets you control your medical treatment by: Allowing your agent to make health care decisions on your behalf as you would want them decided; choosing one person to make health care decisions because you think that person would make the best decisions; Choosing one person to avoid conflict or confusion among family members and/or significant others. The most difficult part about considering potential end-of- life decisions is thinking them through when you are relatively healthy, and then communicating them to your loved ones. Once you have done this, obtaining and filling out the forms should be easy. doyourproxy.org is the first website to offer a free online tool that allows you to quickly and easily create, print, and save the forms required when completing one of the following documents. A Health Care Proxy is a legal document that lets you name a healthcare agent– that is, someone you trust to make a health care decisions for you if you are unable to make decisions for yourself in the future. It also gives you the option of listing specific health care wishes. A Living Will allows you to leave written instructions that explain your health wishes, especially end-of-life care, should you be unable to speak for yourself in the future.
